In memory of our former Lead Governor David Barry

We would like to pay tribute to David Barry a former Governor, and Lead Governor of Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust, who died peacefully on Christmas Eve.

David first joined our Governors in 2008 and actively contributed to C&I becoming the first mental health trust to be granted Foundation Trust status. He was an inspirational and hard-working Governor and a passionate campaigner for mental health. He stood down in 2021 after three consecutive terms in office. Our thoughts are with his wife and family at this sad time.

During his time with the Trust, David helped draft the Trust Constitution and establish the post of Deputy Chair, to support the Trust Chair and Lead Governor. He worked collaboratively with our Trust Chairs who, along with his colleagues appreciated his patience, careful persuasion, and great understanding. He developed a reputation for being a good listener and decision-maker.

The St Pancras Transformation Programme began during the time that David was with the Trust, and he took great interest in the proposals  to develop our estate, including plans for a new hospital in Highgate.

He recognised the challenges that the pandemic created within the NHS and was on our Board of Governors when we started to work more closely with Barnet, Enfield and  was formed.

C&I Deputy Lead Governor and Islington Public Governor, Olga Cecilia Farach, said: “We owe David Barry huge thanks for all his work for C&I and I want to make a personal tribute to him as a former colleague. We will always remember him and his efforts, he has left a lasting legacy.”

Dr Vincent Kirchner, Chief Medical Officer, said: “David took a great interest in the Trust and was dedicated to ensuring that it could offer the best care possible to service users. He selflessly gave his time and energy to public service and he will be sadly missed.”

Deputy Mental Health Law Manager and Mental Capacity Act Lead, Heston Hassett, said: “David was a very valued Associate Hospital Manager and a great friend to all his colleagues. He will be sadly missed”
